Found this huge tank of a lima bean bug (not the scientific name, just something I made up… if you hadn’t guessed that) from another world outside this morning. He was not at all moved by my hovering around taking pictures. I have lived in the south all my life (except for six months on Long Island … long story for another day) and I don’t remember ever seeing a bug like this. He was a good 5 inches long from stem to stern. He looks like he could survive a nuclear war.
The other cool part, I didn’t try to set him on fire or scream like a four-year old when I saw him either! I am imagining him as an ally in the War Against Big Ass Spiders. What should I name him?
UPDATE: A friend on facebook let me know that it is called a “Carolina Mantis.” It is a cousin to the Praying Mantis … cool!
